Last month I was getting in the mood to settle back into an all red, or mostly red at least, wine mode. With the heat of the past few days in the Hudson Valley I thought maybe I should include a white, just in case an Indian Summer was in the offing. This month's picks, both West Coast favorites, are really terrific wines. A wonderful Chardonnay from the Columbia Valley in Washington State and a delicious Paso Robles Zinfandel gives you the opportunity to be prepared whether the thermometer goes up or down.Ridge Crest Chardonnay - $14
This is wine for chardonnay fans and ABC (Anything But Chardonnay) folks alike. Dry and well balanced the Ridge Crest Chardonnay possesses crisp acidity that gives the wine a lovely lift, and only a subtle nuance of the oak/butter elements some people associate with California chards. Try it, I think you'll love it.
Peachy Canyon "Incredible Red" Zinfandel - $12
While some Zinfandels lately seem to fall into the high extraction/high alcohol category, the Incredible Red Zinfandel from Peachy Canyon in Paso Robles, offers up similar flavors of dark fruits and berries in a much more medium-full bodied wine. It's a challenge to find a 100% Zinfandel this well made in this price range.
