Château Cheval Blanc Saint Emilion 1961
Wine Spectator We had two bottles of this vintage. One, recently recorked in California, was rich but clumsy, with an odd earthy/tart contrast; Serena Sutcliffe, who was leading the tasting, suspected adulteration. The other bottle was fantastic, a beautiful expression of this rich, ripe vintage, velvety with plum, prune and meaty flavors, balanced and long. It can hold for another decade.--Cheval-Blanc vertical. Score: 96. —Thomas Matthews, March 31, 1999.Wine Advocate A Possible Legend Candidate. I have consistently mistaken this wine for a great Graves in tastings where it has appeared. Opaque dark ruby/garnet with a rust-colored edge, this wine has a big, full-blown bouquet of burnt tobacco, and earthy, gravelly scents. On the palate, it is sweet, ripe, full bodied, extremely soft and supple, and clearly at its apogee. I have noticed above-normal bottle variation with the 1961 Cheval Blanc, but the best bottles of this wine are marvelously rich and lush. Score: 93. —Robert Parker, January 1998.All sizes are 750mL unless otherwise noted.
